Charles Bungay

Charles Bungay was from Sagona, Newfoundland, and settled in Rose Blanche, Newfoundland. He was married to Mary Hare and they had children: Maria, Thomas, John, George and Edward. I believe Thomas is the father of Alexander Bungay (father of Vivienne Bungay Clarcke.)

Note the information re these connections. An old resident (Joseph Small) of the Burgeo District, Newfoundland (which includes the village of Rose Blanche) wrote a 'Diary of Burgeo' in 1925. In it he writes of a Vatcher family which is connected to some branch(es) of the Bungay family.

"Next we come to Charles Bungay who came from Sagona. He married Mary Hare, sister of the Furby's Harbour families. Charles married in 1846. They had children: Maria; Thomas; John, my old servant for years; George; and Edward. Mrs. Bungay and Maria died in the early seventies. The family was broken up and homes found for the boys. Thomas (Bungay) married Phoebe Vatcher, now Mrs. William Rose. He built in the Reach, but did not live many years. He left three children. One died a young boy, say six years of age. George, in the States, I have mentioned before under Phoebe's name as Vatcher. John [son of Charles and Mary (Hare) Bungay] married here to Isabella Warren. They had one child. Isabella, the wife, died. The daughter grew up and went West somewhere. John, some years after, went to Rose Blanche and married a widow. He died four years ago (which would be ca 1921)."

(Query - is the above John Bungay, who went to Rose Blance, the father of Alexander Bungay - of Erica’s line? Is there a connection with other 'earlier' Bungay family members who removed to Rose Blanche?) Or is Alexander Bungay the son of Thomas Bungay and Phoebe Vatcher? - see below)

I surmise that the above phrase - 'the family was broken up and homes found for the boys' ties in with the fact that in the Irene Hatcher Sibley obituary, three Bungay boys are mentioned as her 'brothers.' They would have been 'step-brothers,' taken in by the Hatcher family, who ended up marrying three of the Hatcher daughters. That is - one of them Alexander Bungay married Flora Hatcher.

Note that the name 'Vatcher' is remarkably close to that of 'Hatcher' - which creates the question of whether they are one in the same - or different branches changed them (or there are spelling discrepancies due to confusion over old writing . . . Were the Bungay boys taken in by relatives - the Hatcher / Vatcher family - whose daughters they subsequently married?)
