1889 Directory

COUNTY OF PRINCE EDWARD.

AMELIASBURGH.

The Township of Ameliasburgh is situated in the County of Prince Edward, and is bcunded on the north by the Bay of Quinte, on the South by the Township of HiUier, on the east by the Township of Sophiasburgh, and on the west by Lake Ontario. Its proximity to the flourishing City of Belleville has, to a great extent, made the commercial interests of the two places identical. The inhabitants of Ameliasburgh, as well as some of the adjoining townships in Prince Edward, have found it to their advantage to buy their goods and wares of the merchants of Belleville, and in order to accommodate the traffic between the two sections, a bridge from Bushy Island to Ferry Point has been undertaken. There are several villages in the township, the most important being Ameliasburgh, Consecon, Rossmore and Rednerville. Ameliasburgh was settled about the same period as the Township of Sidney, and is one of the oldest settled townships in the Province. The soil is excellent for agricultural purposes.
