The Whidden Family

The Whidden family may prove to be the largest (in terms of available data) that we find, at least in the early going.

There are hundreds (yea thousands) of Whiddens online in historical sources - all of them, I believe, connected -and which are the family that goes back prior to the American Revolution. They are mostly Loyalists who came from New Hampshire, New England to settle in Nova Scotia and New Brunwick -and some, subsequently, in Newfoundland.

Some of the Whidden-connected families in Erica Clark Kenny's line are - Blair, Cate, Jones, McLean, Nichols and Sanborn. There are also many families, in turn, linked to these family relatives of Whidden, here mentioned.

Erica's connection with this family is back through the Nichols line to Harriet Susanna (Mrs. George Aaron Nichols Sr., founder of Nicholsville, Newfoundland). She was a Whidden, born in Stillwater, Nova Scotia.

There are many Whidden's in Guysborough County of Nova Scotia - and there is a very likely linke with Harriet Susanna Whidden (through her father, John Whidden).There are names (like 'Archibald' and 'McLain' or 'McLean' which lead to Whidden family-connections in Stillwater, St. Mary's Township, Guysborough County, Nova Scotia.

Harriiet's father, John Whidden, was born 1846 - and her mother was Cathererine Fraser (clearly attested in their marriage documents - as is the fact that George's parents are John Nichols, born 1820, and Hannah McCloud).

The surname Whitton, Whitten, or Whiddon, later Whiton, dates back to the earliest periods of recorded history in England. It is of Anglo-Saxon origin, and was derived from one of the several places that are called Whitton. It is of fairly common usage in England, and was undoubtedly adopted by several families as their surname as early as the twelfth century. The Anglo-Saxon form is "Hwita run", meaning the "White Farm" or hamlet. Hwita was also an Anglo-Saxon word meaning light or fair and it is possible that the name means Hwita's farm or estate. It is interesting to note that the name is still pronounced as though the "H" were the first letter, even though this letter is now moved to the second place.
