More Information on Samuel Barber
From the Cratfield, Suffolk parish register - 'Samuel, son of William and Elizabeth Barber, Cratfield, labourer; born yesterday.'
1861 Census, Guelph Twp., Dist #3 film 0349332, Wellington - aged 40, farmer, b. England (also see Mormon IGI Batch # C062921) I think the IGI refers to his christening as 5th of April, 1819 which is wrong and should be the 15 of April, 1819 (with his birth being on the 14th).
I have seen a microfilm record (Mormon IGI) of the Cratfield Parish registry. Samuel's father (William Barber) was the parish clerk (assistant, first) of Cratfield parish - and I may have been looking at William's hand-writing as he records some of the Barber children baptisms (and others) in the 1830's - all prior, of course, to Samuel and Robert Barber coming to Canada.
I know that Robert Barber, my ancestor and Samuel's brother, came to Canada in 1836, along with his brother William Barber and wife Sophia and their 2 children, and James Barber (I think a brother) who is 15 - and with the Oakes family, whose daughter Harriet, Robert married later that year at Norfolk Primitive Methodist, Guelph. I don't know when Samuel came - whether before or after these others.
Samuel's residence in 1867 was Guelph Township - Concession 2, Lot A. One old record links the farm with a farm called 'Scotslea' with the following description.
The existing farm containing 77 acres is idenified as firstly the N.E.half of the N.E. half of Lot 3, Concession 2, Division B, and the S.E. half of the rea or S.W. half of Lot 3, Conc. 1, Division B, of Guelph Township. The property contains 78.16 acres more or less of which 65 acres are workable, 7 acres are maple bush, 3 acres are cedar swamp, and the balance contains the residence, garden area, and farm buildings. The property has frontage of 824 feet on Fife Rd., approximately one half mile from the south westerly city limits. It has a depth of 2036 feet, widening out across the rear to form an L shape. A roadway, 2036 feet in length and 24.75 feet in width, provides access to Highway 24 South. The residence and farm buildings are located approx. 1500 ft. from Fife Rd., with access from a laneway running parallel to the dividing line between Concession 1 and 2 in Lot 3.
Prior to 1892, the two parcels of land were owned by different individuals. The first parcel in Concession 2 was owned, in 1842, by Joseph Johnson Jonathan Green and wife. During the years up to 1888, the property passed through the hands of three additional owners: Samuel Barber and wife in 1870, George Weltzer and wife in 1872, and Edward Warswick in 1884. In 1888 it was conveyed to Richard Pallister and added to the adjoining farm.
The second parcel in Concession 1 was owned from the Crown by a James Keough and passed thorugh members of his family in 1892. It is noted that the first marriage solemnized in Guelph in Septtember 1827 was that of Christopher Keough and Miss Ann Green. We can only speculate that this was indeed a marriage between the two families who first owned the properties, or were coincidence. Mrs. Christopher Keough survived to 1877 and was given an honoured place in the parade celebrating Guelph's 50th Birthday.
In 1892 the two pieces of property were conveyed to John Savage. The existing house is believed to have been built in 1896, and is a two story Gorgian style home constructed of a double layer of hand-made brick. A single story kitchen section was added later . . .
The farm passed into the Darby famiy in 1913 with Cornelius Darby Ist adding it to his farm holdings on the Waterloo Road. Ten years later in 1923 the property was conveyed to Cornelius Taylor Darby and his wife Elizabeth English Darby. Cornelius 1 died in 1932 and his funeral was held on the day following New Year's Day. A terrific ice storm had littered the countryside with fallen trees and disrupted services which existed at that time.
With the mphasis on food production during WW II, the rural hydro program rapidly and hydro was installed in 1941. Other moden conveniences were added at this time and the home was arranged to accomodate two families as Cornelius Darby III was married by this time. By 1949 the need for a larger farm resulted in the Darby's relocating in Nichol Township. (Note: Henrietta Darby married John William Barber, son of John and Sarah Barber).
My father (Arthur Freeman Barber) was born very near to this location (and perhaps even on part of the farm that Samuel Barber had also owned or farmed). There was an old stone house (now gone) on the corner of the concession road (on Hwy 24 going west towards Guelph) - on what is now where Whitelaw Rd. intersects with 24. This was the Lawrence farm where my dad was born in 1921, his father Gordon farming there and living in that old house. About a half mile north, though is where I think Samuel lived, not far from the intersecting (of Whitelaw) railway. On the other hand, there is the record of the death of a daughter (see below) who was burned tragically and the residence of the family is isted as 'the Waterloo Road' which always made me wonder where in fact they lived, or whether they lived at different places at different times, though farming (roughly) the same acreage. I think she was burned when her nightgown caught fire from a candle that she was carrying as she went to bed. John Barber (my dad's grandfather - son of Robert, bro. of Samuel) farmed (100 acres) at the other - northern - end of this road where it intersects with the Paisley Road. There's a big old tree there now, behind a public school. When I first looked around there in the 1980's the ruins of the house were still there (foundations, outhouse, etc.) and so were the limestoned foundation walls of the barn, and silo standing, etc. That's now all green grass with the trees and memories, only, left. My Grandmother (Alice Annie Green) lived with her family about half way down the Whitelaw Road, about opposite to where Samuel Barber lived when she met and married my Grandfather, Gordon Barber, in 1914. Imperial Rd. cuts back now across what was the opening entrance of John Barber's farm, Elm Lane Farm, on the Paisley Road.
Guelph Mercury (Wed. 4 Apr. 1888) "Death - Samuel, aged 72. Funeral from the residence of his son, Thomas, Alice Street. Mr. Barber was an old and well-known resident of Guelph, died suddenly this morning of asthma and bronchitis. The deceased was down the street yesterday. 50 yrs, 11 mos. 10 days."
