William Langrill

William Langrill, born ca 1789 (sometimes: Langrell), resided and farmed acreage in the Townland of Cappagh, parish of Aughrim, County Wicklow, Ireland. He married Sarah Stephenson in 1811 in the Church of Ireland in Kilcommon Parish. William and Sarah were the parents of Sarah Langrill who married Charles Willoughby in 1849. The Stephensons lived at Cappagh Hill, Co. Wicklow.

Children of William Langrill and Sarah Stephenson:

Sarah Langrill - married Charles Willoughby 30 Jan. 1849.

Samuel Langrill - married Margaret Hunt, of the Townland of Coolafancery; daughter of John Hunt, 5 February, 1850. He is buried in the Ballintone Church of Ireland graveyard.

Family stories relate that Sarah Langrill was related (cousin?) to Dr. Walter Francis Langrill (b 1869, Haldiman Co., ON) and his father Dr. John A. Langrill (wife: Margaret Sill), who served as Chief Medical (Medical Superintendent) officers in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada at and around the turn of the century (1900). Father of John A. Langrill was Francis Langrill (born in Ireland, ca 1799) who died 21 June 1890, York Co., ON. Francis married Jane Ralston (or Rolston) on the 9th of July 1829, Home District, Ontario. Francis may have been the brother of William Langrill, father of Sarah Langrill who married Charles Willoughby's.

Langrills in the 1798 Irish Rebellion:

In the book, 'Protestants Massacred in the Diocese of Ferns' - the name Dangrell (Langrell(?)), John - twenty-seventh May, of Kiltrish. In the book, 'Memoirs of the Different Rebellions in Ireland, by Richard Musgrave: "Isaac Langrell, a Protestant, was piked near Gorey; after which, as some signs of life appeared in him, a ruffian, with a hay knife on the end of a stick gave him a stroke across the neck, which almost severed his head from his body; on which William Byrne, who was present with a drawn sword, and seemed to command the party, ordered them to march off, saying, " . . . for the heretick will rise no more." Other Langrills 'murdered' in the 1798 Rebellion - John Langrel, parish of Cappagh and Samuel Langrel, parish of Ballynabarn.

Another record and possible connection: Andrew Bannister, born 1787, married Elizabeth Langril, b 1800. Their daughter Mary Griffith Bannister (b 31 May 1823 Co. Wicklow, Ireland) married Thomas Willoughby (born 1823, Co. Wicklow. Their son was William Willoughby, born 1863, Elmwood, Bentinck Co., ON. It may well be that this Thomas Willoughby is the same Thomas who in the 1851 Census of Canada was living with (his brother?) Charles Willoughby, in Eramosa Township, Wellington County, Ontario.

He seems to have the same naming pattern in his children as did Thomas of Ottawa (plus Thomas of Ottawa had a son, Joseph), so they are probably brothers.

T here were two Richard Langrells living close together in Moyne townland, County Wicklow, Ireland (and also very close to the County Carlow border):
