Hugh Mosher
Hugh Mosher (or Moger) was the son of Hugh Mosher (b 1608) and Lydia Maxon (b 1611). He was born 12 June 1633, Cucklington, Somerset, England and died at Newport, Rhode Island, before & December, 1713. He was the son of Nicholas Moger and Lydia Maxson.
He married Rebecca Maxson 1664 in Westerley, Rhode Island.
Rebecca was born 6 February 1636/7 in Aquidneck, Washington Co., Rhode Island. She died 28 January 1688/89, in Dartmouth, Bristol Co., Massachusetts.
Son: Nicholas Mosher (b 1666 - d 1747)
Hugh Mosher first appears in Rhode Island records with his purchase of land in Westerly on June 29, `1660. On May 4, 1664 he was admitted as a freeman to the colony. It was around this time he married Rebecca Maxson. On July 8, 1668 he bought a part of Thomas Lawton's farm near Hunting Swamp. On August 24, 1676 he was a member of the court martial held at Newport for the trial of certain Indians charged with being engaged in King Phillip's designs, at which time he was called Ensign Hugh Mosher. Several of the Indians were sentenced to be executed. His 1680 taxes were 1 ppound, 4 shillings, 1 penny. This is a large tax so he must have been prospering. When the first Baptist Church was organized at Dartmouth, Massachusetts in 1684, Hugh was ordained as its pastor. His wife Rebecca died before 1700 and he married a second wife Sarah. Hugh Mosher died in 1713 at the age of 80 years old. His will was admitted to probate December 7, 1713. Hugh Mosher was a farmer, a blacksmith, and a Baptisit minister. He seems to have lived most his life on his farm, which lay partly in Portsmouth and partly in Newport. In some records however, he calls himself "of Dartmouth".
